Advanced Placement in a nutshell

Advanced Placement (AP) is a program developed and administered by the College Board in order to deliver college-level content in various subjects to high school students. These students then undergo examinations and the results obtained can then lead to them receiving placement or college credit.

Why should you take an AP Course?

You should take an AP course if you’d like to:

  • Demonstrate an early aptitude for the subject you are taking to universities
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm and willingness to learn
  • Earn college credit at universities that offer them
  • Possibly save on college tuition and cost of books if you are able to obtain credit

Logistics

Once a student selects the subjects that they are going to write an AP for, they will then have to study the content and write a pen and paper test that can range from 90-200 minutes depending on the subject. Question types can vary from multiple choice to free response. Students typically take AP exams in grade 11 or 12.
