College interviews give you a proper opportunity to show off your skills beyond your academic achievements. You get to truly show the admissions panel your personality and experience. Although the black and white part of the application matters, this part can guarantee or disqualify your selection from a competitive pool of applicants.

Covid-19 has significantly inspired the adoption of virtual interviews since most international students cannot travel. We want you to take advantage of the relaxed atmosphere of online meet-ups. You will be in a location you are most comfortable, hence less likely to let your nervousness throw you off-guard.

This article teaches you exactly how to prepare for your virtual college admissions interview, Schedule your Interview Early Enough

We are huge believers of preparation. Scheduling your interview early give you an upper hand while selecting the most convenient dates. Otherwise, most slots will be booked out and you will be stuck with the date you have your class presentation or tennis practice. You don’t want to entertain the idea of missing it.

Jump in on the interview slots as early as your schedule and the school allows.

Test your Gadgets

Technology comes with its set of challenges. Make sure it represents you in the best light to save time and prevent interrupting your flow of thought. For instance, slow connection will have you repeating yourself or even worse, you could miss an important question.

Test your camera, audio, and explore every inch of the platform you are using. If you are using zoom, know how to mute, use the chat button, and share screen, just in case you need it.

Take this preparation as seriously as you would double check your files before entering a physical office.

Dress Appropriately

We cannot emphasise this enough! Business casual is an appropriate dress code because it makes you appear professional and relaxed. Although you are only going to be visible from the waist up, we recommend applying the dress code to your shoes. You never know when you need to stand up for anything.Wear something simple and clean while avoiding bright and overly dull colours.

Prepare to Answer Questions

Let’s face it. The questions are why you are doing the interview. They are the main part of the show. This is your moment to shine and we want you to take it!

Although the questions might change, the story remains the same.

They want to know you and how you will fit into the school. These are the basic questions:

  1.  Why are you interested in this college?
  2. What are you most excited about in your selected course and program?
  3. What is your best extracurricular activity and why?
  4. What have you liked most about your high school?
  5. What is your favourite thing about high school and why?
  6. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
  7. What subject do you enjoy most?
  8. How would your teachers describe you?
  9. What are you most proud of so far?
  10. Where did you see yourself now ten years ago? Are you proud?

Prepare to Ask Questions

The question part should never be one-sided. This is your chance to show you have done your research and are committed to the school. You also get to let a certain mature side of you pop up by asking intelligent questions.

Keep in mind that most of these interviewers are alumni or existing students.

Some examples you should prepare for include:

  1. What is your favorite thing about the school?
  2. What is one thing you would change about the school?
  3. What was your favorite tradition?
  4. What is the student social and academic culture like?
  5. How is student activism in the school?
  6. What is/was your favorite extracurricular activity and why?
  7. What advice would you give yourself as a freshman knowing what you know now?

Have a Mock Interview

We give you permission to bother your friends and family for this part. Have a lot of practice interviews where you prepare to answer questions as you would in the actual interview. Practice until everything comes out naturally.

After the trial runs with your close circle, the purpose is to book a mock interview with a teacher or academic counsellor. They have more experience and the trial will more or less simulate the actual interview.

Concluding thoughts

Although it is important, remember that the interviewer is just as excited and nervous to meet you and impress you. As ambassadors of the school, they care about how they represent the school. So you are all humans with different goals in mind and almost the same worry….will I make a fool of myself?

With this in mind, relax and be prepared to let your excellence shine though
