Vacations can make the difference between Harvard and that school you dread going to but feels like a safe choice.
There is so much you can do, but we’ll focus on things that will build your college application portfolio.
Colleges love seeing students that take on unique hobbies, especially at a time when being idle is so tempting.
Stand out!
You’re wondering how colleges will know you did this right?
Your overall results will tell them all. Take this free time to evaluate your academic and extracurricular performance.
Are there areas you feel need improvement? How soon can you begin working on them? Who can you reach out for help?
Take note of your strengths and weaknesses and work on improving all areas.
There is something very mature and appealing in a student that puts themselves in real-life work experiences.
You learn the hard way and get to practice skills others will only learn after high school or university.
This shows a proactive student that is not scared of challenges and puts themselves smack in the middle of criticism.
You could also learn something new that you could add to your resume.
If you have always wanted to learn to code, play an instrument, or a sport, this is a perfect time.
With less workload from school, you can learn something new in weeks and figure out how it strengthens your existing skill.
For example, learning to cook can expose you to topics on carcinogens or food preservation and sustainability.
Write journals about it and improve your broad thinking.
Don’t panic.
We know you don’t have money to start a tech company…maybe.
A business could be anything from babysitting services to dog walking. It’s all part of a budding entrepreneurial journey that shows you want to learn and lead.
Don’t be scared of failure, instead focus on the lessons learned and how your perspective broadens as you expose yourself to people and management.
In best case scenario, it could blow up and you get to make a name for yourself!
What does this do for my college application?
Here’s a scenario. Have you read some of the best-accepted college essays?
Some describe simple family interactions that leave the readers in tears, laughter, and sheer amazement.
Take time to appreciate the people around you and learn about your culture, interests, and lineage.
Some of these tips seem tedious and others too simple for a vacation.
Just keep in mind that we play the long game here, and we want you to have a quality application profile.
These are just templates, so don’t be scared to customize the tasks and do what you love.
Happy holiday!
