How do you prepare for a successful future…better yet, how can you thrive where you are?

Truth is, besides your geometry and psychology class, you need soft and hard skills that set you apart in the job applicant pool.

In a dynamic environment, the world needs more innovative, creative, and proactive people.

This translates to the “global achievement gap,” which is the gap between what is taught in schools and what is actually needed in the workplace.

At Career Lane, we encourage you to work on these 7 skills while in college,

1Communication Skills

You’ve heard that your network is net worth, right?

How are you forming human relationships?

How are you presenting yourself to other people?

Do you need to pitch a business idea to prospective investors?

These questions tell you that how you articulate your thoughts and ideas really affect who listens and connects with you.

Work on improving how you would coordinate your team in different communication platforms.

2. Collaboration Skills

Is there a classmate or co-worker you dread being partnered with? It could be due to their inability to listen, share ideas, or just plain tardiness.

Trust us, you don’t want to be THAT person. Employers value people that can work in a group setting as they also work on projects that require different skill sets.

3. Personal Management

The pandemic really shifted workplace dynamics. People that have mastered personal management and self-direction particularly prevailed.

The current job market requires people that can organize, manage, and execute ideas without waiting for someone else to guide them.

Practice this with your classroom projects and take the initiative of working on projects without your professors hovering behind you.

4. Technology Skills

We bet you know this but we’ll emphasize for good measure.

This doesn’t necessarily mean you need to be a coding expert, just be up to date with digital tools you might need for your projects.

It could be how to use Zoom, LinkedIn, or Excel. Point is, wherever your career is, learn what technologies you need to use.

Learning tech skills expands your knowledge and sets you apart as an applicant or entrepreneur.

5. Global Competency

Please note this.

At one point or another, you will be working with people from different cultures.

Since you are at Career Lane, we assume you even want to study in different countries. Global competency goes beyond sight-seeing and knowing different cultures, to actually appreciating these lifestyles.

Explore different study abroad programs in your school and get a chance to contextualize people and how they think.

6. Creativity

Leave robotic thinking to the robots. Even the tech geniuses that design them need to be creative.

Expand your thinking through brain-storming sessions and being inquisitive if you want to create mind-blowing ideas.

Have you heard of the Metaverse? It’s a CRAZY million-dollar idea that comes from creative minds. Will it work? We can only wait and see, but the founders were bold enough to present it

Be Bold. Don’t stifle whatever you feel is too much or impossible.

7. Leaderships Skills

Leadership means guiding other people through. It could be a class project, a sport, a group discussion, or even the student body.

Effective leaders are patient, inspirational, professional, and passionate about what they do. The world loves and admires people that show such qualities.

Build these skills by taking different roles in your community and school and watch yourself grow as an individual and respected professional.

Final thoughts

Surviving in the current and future job market requires these core competencies. In an educational system that emphasizes on memory and recall, you must know what you need to fully succeed.

Go out there and be outstanding!
